Elie Wiesel, Nobel Laureate, Holocaust Survivor and ‘Night’ Author, Dies at 87

Elie Wiesel, the prolific Nobel Peace Prize laureate whose memoir about surviving Nazi concentration camps was one of the most poignant accounts of the Holocaust, has died. He was 87 hungrysharkevolutionhackcheats.com. Wiesel’s son, Elisha Wiesel, told NBC News on Saturday that the author had died, and said the family is observing Shabbat and has requested privacy at the moment. Wiesel was born in 1928 in Romania. At the age of 15 he was deported to Auschwitz with his family, where his mother and sister died. Wiesel and his father were later taken to Buchenwald. His sick and malnourished father died there following a beating from a German soldier. Wiesel chronicled the experience in his acclaimed

1955 autobiography, “Night.” Holocaust activist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel, 83, in his office on in New York on Sept. 12, 2012. Bebeto Matthews / AP The atrocities he witnessed fueled Wiesel to combat inhumanity around the world, including in the former Yugoslavia and in Darfur — efforts that in 1986, earned him a Nobel Peace Prize. “We must speak, we must take sides, for neutrality helps the oppressor — never the victim,” he said upon receiving the prize. The prize’s citation referred to him as “a messenger to mankind.” “My father raised his voice to presidents and prime ministers when he felt issues on the world stage demanded action,” Elisha Wiesel said in a statement released later Saturday. “But those who knew him in private life had the pleasure of experiencing a gentle and devout man who was always interested in others, and whose quiet voice moved them to better themselves http://www.falloutshelterhackss.com/.” “I will hear that voice for the rest of my life, and hope and pray that I will continue to earn the unconditional love and trust he always showed me,” Elisha Wiesel said. It has now sold more than 6 million copies, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, which first reported Wiesel’s death. Wiesel originally wrote “Night” in French and had it translated into English. He waged countless battles for innocent victims regardless of ethnicity or creed.” “But what was most meaningful to him was teaching the innumerable students who attended his university classes,” she said. “We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support we have already seen in the wake of his passing.” Wiesel became an outspoken advocate of education on the Holocaust when President Jimmy Carter appointed him chairman of the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust in 1978. At the Holocaust Days of Remembrance Ceremony in April 2009, standing alongside Obama in the Capitol Rotunda, Wiesel said, “I belong to a traumatized generation that felt abandoned by God and betrayed by mankind. And yet, I believe that one must not estrange from God or mankind.” Later in life, he made news for another reason: He was one of the victims of Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme. His foundation, the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, lost more than $15 million it had invested with Madoff, and he and his wife lost savings. When asked to describe Madoff http://www.starwarsgalaxyofheroeshackcheats.com/, Wiesel told The New York Times, “Psychopath — it’s too nice a word for him.” Obama said that he first came to know Wiesel through his account of the Holocaust, but “I was also honored and deeply humbled to call him a dear friend.” The president recalled visiting Buchenwald with Wiesel, where the author was held as a teenager. “At the end of our visit to Buchenwald, Elie said that after all that he and the other survivors had endured, ‘we had the right to give up on humanity,’” Obama said. “But he said, ‘we rejected that possibility … we said, no, we must continue believing in a future.’” “Tonight, we give thanks that Elie never gave up on humanity and on the progress that is possible when we treat one another with dignity and respect,” Obama said. Russia’s Latest Nuclear-Powered Icebreaker Extends Arctic Dominance

The Cold War may be long over, but there’s still the Arctic chill wwesupercardhackcheat.com. Russia floated its largest and most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker last month, upping the ante in what is literally the coldest global gold rush. The ice-smashing ship was Russia’s sixth reactor-driven polar vessel. The United States doesn’t have a single one. icebreakers? Moscow is the most active player in the race for polar dominance — despite the current economic crisis debilitating its fortunes at home. Of Russia’s 39 icebreakers, six are powered by nuclear reactors www.killshotbravohackcheats.com. The newest vessel — the Arktika — was floated on June 16 and will make its maiden voyage next year. An unchallenged feat of icebreaker engineering, the vessel is 1 ½ football fields in length and is powered by twin nuclear reactors. It currently has two active icebreakers and one ice-capable research vessel — none of which are nuclear-powered. Adm. The dominance of Moscow is not surprising given the country’s vast, 25,000-mile northern seaboard. “Just look at the length of the Russian Arctic coastline, it’s the biggest in the world,” said Pavel Gudev, at Moscow’s Institute of World History and Economic Relations. “Of course you need more ships.” By comparison, the U.S. has an Arctic coastline of just 1,000 miles. Those disparities haven’t stymied the intense interest in the region from both Washington and Moscow since the outbreak of the Cold War. The closest route for a Russian ballistic missile to reach the States — and vice versa — is over the North Pole. The same goes for warhead-carrying submarines during their regular visits to the Arctic Ocean. “The Arctic area remains part of Russia’s strategic defense plans,” said Fenenko of the Moscow State University. It also might have enable a corridor from East Asia to Europe around Russia’s northern coast that is 3,000 miles shorter than any current alternative. Baghdad Bombing in Karada Kills More Than 100, Injures Scores

More than 100 people were killed and scores more were wounded when a suicide bomber hit a crowded Baghdad shopping area Sunday http://www.getiphonegiveaway.com/, the third mass murder believed to have been perpetrated by Islamic extremists in a matter of days.

The blast hit the Karada district of Baghdad shortly after midnight, when the area was packed with residents who had gone out after breaking their Ramadan fasts.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack and said it had deliberately targeted Shiite Muslims, according to The Associated Press www.freeps4giveaways.com.

The carnage came at the end of a bloody week of attacks that have been tied to ISIS. A bombing Tuesday of an airport in Istanbul, Turkey, which killed 45 people, is suspected to have been orchestrated by an ISIS affiliate based in Central Asia.

Then, Friday, gunmen in Bangladesh attacked a Dhaka restaurant, eventually killing two police officers and 20 hostages. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mohammed Al-Rubaiy of Baghdad governate’s security committee told NBC News that 167 people were killed and 185 were injured. Several children and women were among the dead.

Other reports put the death toll around 120; conflicting casualty counts are common in the immediate aftermath of an attack in Iraq. The government had no official casualty count Sunday.

“Suddenly, a huge explosion took place on the other side of the street where I left my family,” said Muhammed Majeed Muhammed, 39, a government employee who was at the market with his wife and their two children.

“This is a cowardly and heinous act of unparalleled proportions, to target peaceful civilians in the closing days of the holy month of Ramadan,” Kubis said in a statement. “This shows [ISIS'] wanton intentions to kill, maim and demoralize.”

The White House released a statement expressing unity with the Iraqi people:
The United States strongly condemns ISIL’s heinous terrorist attacks in Baghdad last night that killed over 100 people, including families gathering to break their Ramadan fast and those joining millions around the world in watching the Euro Cup. We remain united with the Iraqi people and government in our combined efforts to destroy ISIL. These attacks only strengthen our resolve to support Iraqi security forces as they continue to take back territory from ISIL, just as we continue to intensify our efforts to root out ISIL’s terrorist network and leaders.
Karim Sami, a 35-year-old street vendor, expressed frustration with the government’s failure to secure the capital in wake of the Fallujah victory.

“We are in a state of war, and these places are targeted. The security can’t focus on the war [against ISIS] and forget Baghdad,” Sami told the AP.

Hours after the bombing, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi — who had ordered the offensive on Fallujah — visited the site of the blast gta5hackcheats.com.
